The Girls are Back to Work

March 18, 2012

It is not even spring yet but today was warm like summer!  21 degrees!  Everyone was out today and that includes the bees and Margot, the cat.

Margot having a good old roll in the sun.

Not much is blooming in the garden but there is one lone Iris Reticulata and some purple crocuses to beguile the bees.

The bees were busy collecting pollen.  The silver maples are in bud and apparently they are very attractive to honey bees so that must where they are going. Wish I had a Genie truck to get up there to look.  The bees are also visiting the crocus patches. The crocus pollen is a very bright orange, think saffron, but most of the pollen coming into the hive is white. I was playing with the video on my I-phone but sadly I haven't figured out how to post on this blog yet.  As soon as I do you will see an awesome video of a bee on the crocus and bringing pollen into the hive.  Sigh...I will leave you with a photo of the hives with the shadow of the sugar maple on the shed behind.

The hives

I haven't done anything with the bees yet but I am planning on going in this Wednesday so you will have lots to read about next week.  I have been reading blogs from other people since I started having a bees so I'm going to start adding them to my blog so you can see what others are saying.   One blog simply connects the reader to bee blogs that he thinks are interesting so I will start with adding his.  www.surreybeekeeper.co.uk

Enjoy the warm weather.
